The Mount Shasta Trail Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that seeks to connect people to nature and communities by designing, constructing, and maintaining trails in the Mt. Shasta area. We have a volunteer board and no paid staff, so donations go nearly 100% toward building trails.

2020 accomplishments:

  • Built almost 5 miles of new trail to start the construction of the Gateway Trail Expansion, which is a planned 46-mile extension of the very popular, existing 11 miles of Gateway Trail.

  • Nearly completed the redesign of the Castle Lake to Heart Lake Trail so that the trail will be less steep, more erosion-resistant, and easier to follow.

  • Added several bridges to span small drainage ditches in the MS City Park.

  • Made major improvements to the Hedge Creek Falls Trail in anticipation of creating a safe and scenic trail to Mossbrae Falls.

  • Obtained a tool trailer and outfitted it to support trail crew activities.

  • Expanded our trail crew and held numerous volunteer work days on the new Gateway Trail segments, Heart Lake, City Park, etc.

  • Built several new kiosks for the Lake Siskiyou Trail and ordered detailed maps to go on those kiosks.

  • Landed a grant worth more than $1 million from the California Natural Resources Agency to support and build part of the Gateway Trail Expansion (despite the size of this grant, we will need additional funding).

Proceeds from MR are used to support our activities, such as purchasing new tools for our trail crew.

Plans and goals for 2021:

  • Build an additional 10-12 miles of trail in the Gateway Trail system.

  • Make progress on the Mossbrae Falls Trail.

  • Complete signage for the Lake Siskiyou Trail and the City Park.

  • Obtain a grant to expand the Shastice Bike Park.

  • Finish the Castle Lake to Heart Lake Trail.

  • Continue to work on a connection between Snowman’s Hill and Dunsmuir.

Siskiyou County 4-H Youth Development Program: Mountain Runners Highlight

This week’s Highlight:

Siskiyou County 4-H Youth Development Program

u County 4-H Youth Development Program plays a key role in the development of young people and is a leader in creating opportunities for youth and adults to learn, grow, and work together as catalysts for positive change. Taking place through meaningful, hands-on, community-based learning experiences around Civic Engagement, Leadership, Healthy Living and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program engages youth in reaching their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development.

Siskiyou County 4-H has over 200 youth members and 50 adult partners that participate in 4-H club programs and an additional 100-300 students that are reached annually through school enrichment programs. Like most programs we have seen our share of challenges throughout 2020 and into the early months of 2021. By teaching the ability to adapt, make improvements and grow in times of adversity we are building resiliency in our youth and helping them learn to thrive. It is more important than ever that through Civic Engagement youth are learning to make a positive difference by engaging in learning opportunities that give them a heightened sense of responsibility and capacity to connect as active members of their communities, nation and world. All proceeds provided from work at community events are used to provide travel opportunities for 4-H youth attendees for leadership and civic conferences, as well as engagement in future community service opportunities.
