Augustine says:
“I am an 18 year old female student athlete at Yreka High School and have lived in Siskiyou county for most of my life. I love to use my free time creating things and running! I have ran at the varsity level on Yreka’s track and cross country teams for all 4 of my years and got the honor to be captain of the varsity girls XC team for my junior and senior seasons. You may also see me around Yreka volunteering in my community as co-president of the Siskiyou YMCA Teen Leadership Council.
I do not have any formal training in a specific art medium but my favorite kinds of art are paint and design. I began making my entry to the Mt. Shasta 4th of July race during a power outage and it originally started as a drawing on paper. I love bright colors and knew I had to pick a bright colored flower. The first flower I added was the California Poppy and to me that seemed like the obvious choice! I searched the Internet until I found the Mt. Eddie Lupine! This flower seemed perfect because the trail up Mt. Eddie is one of my favorite hikes that I do with my cross country team. I see lupines all the time in Siskiyou County and it was in my color scheme!
I started this contest having no idea how to convert my drawing to the correct type of file but thankfully my yearbook teacher Mr. Smith knew how to do this and helped me through the process. After he scanned my drawing I went to town for a few weeks in Photoshop fixing all the lines and colors, and just like that it was done!
After high school I hope to do a semester abroad in Spain to further develop my Spanish language skills. I also plan to explore a career in wild land firefighting. I just recently completed my firefighter 1-C training and am hoping to be hired to work on hand crew next summer!”
